IATA : Verstecktes Gefahrgut im Passagiergepäck: "Überlebensausrüstung"

(Hidden dangerous goods in baggage - "aviation survival kit")

IATA berichtet von einem Vorfall, wie er sich in auf einem inner-australischen Flug ereignet hat.

Haarsträubend, aber wahr - als Gepäckstück eingecheckt - sogenannte "Überlebensausrüstung", welche unter anderem -3- Leucht(signal)körper - (Explosivstoffe der Klasse 1) sowie Rauchkörper (Klasse 1) und spezielle Zündhölzer enthielt. Der Kit kann auf der Website: www.equipped.org/safekit.htm betrachtet werden. Unverständlich die Tatsache, daß bei der Gepäcküberprüfung nicht auf verstecktes Gefahrgut geachtet wurde. Glücklicherweise gehört diese Information in der Rubrik "Incidents" und nicht unter "Accidents".

An Australian airline had a dangerous goods incident recently involving a passenger who travelled on domestic services and checked in a "Surviv-a-Pak" as a piece of baggage. The Surviv-a-pak is an aviation survival kit manufactured by S.A.F. Enterprises of Rockwall, TX that contains among other things 3 flares, 1 smoke generator and a box of 50 waterproof matches. The item was not queried at check-in by the Customer Service Officer. The only reason that it was detected was that the Surviv-a-pak did not arrive on the same flight as the passenger. When the passenger advised Baggage Services at destination of the missing piece he advised them that the contents included 3 flares. The security manager impounded the item and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority advised of the incident.

The Orange bag also contains a small tent, space blankets, food, water and other items. Total weight 4.6 kg (10.1 lb.) There is information about these kits on a website - www.equipped.org/safekit.htm The flares are manufactured by a company called Skyblazer in California. The Material Safety Data Sheet for the red flare mix does not identify any UN Number or specify transport limitations despite containing ingredients consisting of: potassium perchlorate, magnesium and strontium nitrate.
