FEHLENDE GEFAHRGUTDOKUMENTATION -

Fünf Jahre Haft / 250.000$ Strafe

US Freight Forwarder Pleads Guilty

The president of a Miami freight forwarder faces up to five years in jail and up to $250,000 fine after pleading guilty to federal charges of trying to ship hazardous material to Paraguay without proper documentation.

The freight forwarder were accused of trying to ship 81 boxes of toner fluid

- a flammable petroleum distillate last June. The agent had received the shipment on three pallets wrapped in clear shrink-wrap, and clearly labelled on at least two sides with hazardous material placards. The manufacturers shipping paper also identified the contents as hazardous.

It was alleged that the placards were torn from the outermost row of boxes and the pallets re-wrapped in black plastic to conceal the contents.

The shipment was then sent to the airport for shipment on Lan Chile without disclosing the nature of the hazard. Lan Chile staff contacted authorities when they had to break down one pallet for stowage in an aircraft belly compartment, and discovered torn boxes and the remaining hazardous material warnings.

The prosecutor said that the president's fingerprints had been discovered on the cargo and learned that he had handled it before it was re-wrapped.

The sentence is due to be handed down on March 1st.
