FAA Proposes $50,000 Civil Penalty Against California Firm for Shipping Hazardous Materials on Aircraft
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a $50,000 civil penalty against Desser Tire & Rubber Co., of Montebello, Calif., for shipping undeclared hazardous materials via FedEx aircraft from the Santa Fe Springs, CA, airport to Albuquerque Sunport Airport, New Mexico.
The FAA said the shipment was discovered when a FedEx employee heard the sound of moving liquid, opened the package, and found four inner fiberboard packages, each containing two one-quart containers of battery electrolyte, a corrosive material containing sulfuric acid.
In its letter to the company, the FAA said the shipment was not documented with shipping papers, and was not properly declared, marked or labeled as required for corrosive materials, all violations of federal hazardous materials transportation regulations.
This announcement is made in accordance with the FAA's practice of releasing information to the public on newly issued enforcement actions involving penalties of $50,000 or more.
